The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
As any prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
